MrBeast's newest battle: granting wishes for kids battling cancer

Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, is the most followed creator on YouTube. He has built a career on record-breaking stunts, massive giveaways, and outrageous challenges. His recent uploads include “7 Days Stranded in the Arctic,” “I Stranded 100 People in the Wilderness For $250,000,” “Last to Leave Grocery Store Wins $250,000,” and “Survive 30 Days Stranded With Your Ex, Win $250,000.” Those videos alone have accumulated hundreds of millions of combined views. But on Saturday, MrBeast traded desert islands and grocery stores for a mission of a different kind: helping children and young adults battle cancer.

The new video, “I Helped 100 Kids Fight Cancer,” debuted on YouTube with a clear message: no child should have to face cancer alone. The 28-year-old creator partnered with his charitable organization Beast Philanthropy, Stand Up To Cancer, biopharmaceutical company Amgen, and the childhood cancer research organization St. Baldrick’s Foundation. He also brought in a surprise guest: NBA superstar LeBron James, whose LeBron James Family Foundation helped turn the video into a day of joy, play, and unforgettable memories.

A Different Kind of MrBeast Challenge

MrBeast has never shied away from using his platform for good. His past philanthropic efforts have included planting trees, cleaning the oceans, and funding food banks. But with this project, he aimed to shine a spotlight on a more urgent issue. Cancer remains the number one disease killer of children in the United States, and around the world, more than 105,000 children lose their lives to cancer every year. The statistics are staggering: every two minutes, a child somewhere on the planet is diagnosed with cancer.

In a statement, MrBeast explained why he got involved. “Every year, more than 105,000 kids around the world lose their lives to cancer, and we’re working to change that,” he said. “Behind every life saved is an army of doctors, researchers, volunteers and organizations – like Stand Up To Cancer, which raises awareness and funds research to detect and treat cancers, and St. Baldrick’s, where heroes and volunteers shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer – as well as companies like Amgen, who are developing the next generation of cancer treatments. Together, every step brings us a little closer to a world without cancer.”

The video is not just a feel-good segment. It is also a fundraising and awareness campaign designed to support a future SU2C Pediatric Cancer Dream Team. This team will unite top scientists and researchers from different institutions and disciplines with the goal of speeding up the pace at which new treatments get to patients who need them. The dream team model is a signature approach for Stand Up To Cancer, which often brings together collaborators rather than competing labs to solve complex research problems.

LeBron James Joins the Surprise

One of the most memorable parts of the video takes place in Akron, Ohio, where LeBron James teamed up with MrBeast to surprise six local St. Baldrick’s kids and several other pediatric cancer survivors at the LeBron James Family Foundation’s I PROMISE School. Together, they shared a basketball court, and the kids got to shoot hoops with James. The NBA icon even participated in a head-to-head shoot-out with MrBeast, adding the kind of lighthearted competition that MrBeast fans have come to expect.

James didn’t stop there. He gave MrBeast and the kids access to House Three Thirty, a development created by his foundation and described as a destination “to bring dreams to life” through dining, retail, arts, entertainment, and mentorship offerings. Inside, the group enjoyed activities before taking a tour of the LeBron James Museum and sitting down for dinner at Buckets, a part of the sprawling complex.

“It means a lot to me and my foundation to be a part of uplifting these amazing kids and giving them a day to just have fun,” James said. “It was an honor to share the court with them, and even better to share our space and create incredible memories alongside their families. We just wanted them to know they are real life superheroes.”

Blood Drives and Hospital Visits

The video also follows MrBeast to his hometown of Greenville, North Carolina, where he teamed up with Dr. Mike, a physician and popular YouTube creator, to mount a blood drive. The goal was to save 1,000 lives by collecting blood donations, a crucial resource for cancer patients who often require transfusions during treatment. The event also brought together representatives from Amgen and St. Baldrick’s, and photos from the day show MrBeast posing with executives, including Dr. Jay Bradner, executive vice president of research and development, AI and data at Amgen, and St. Baldrick’s CEO Kathleen Ruddy.

Later, MrBeast visited Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he met kids undergoing treatment and spoke with Dr. Alan S. Wayne about the need for more cancer research and the importance of giving hope to children in the fight. Those conversations reinforce the video’s message that behind every statistic is a human story and that progress requires investment in science.

Voices From the Partner Organizations

The campaign has drawn praise from leaders across the cancer research community. Katie Couric, co-founder of Stand Up To Cancer and a media entrepreneur, said that most people don’t realize cancer is the number one disease killer of kids in the U.S. “Each and every child deserves a chance to grow up,” she said, “and the research we’ll fund through this campaign can help make that happen.” She also praised MrBeast for using his enormous reach, which she said rivals major live television events, to ask people all over the world to support children and families affected by cancer.

Dr. Julian Adams, president and CEO of SU2C, called attention to the global scale of the problem. “Every two minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer somewhere in the world,” he said. “We couldn’t be more grateful to Jimmy, Beast Philanthropy and his global community of followers for this remarkable effort on behalf of children who need new hope, new progress, and new ways to help them survive and thrive.”

Amgen’s Dr. Jay Bradner also shared his perspective. “Research is how we turn hope into something real for patients, but it requires rigor, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to getting the science right.” Kathleen Ruddy, CEO of St. Baldrick’s Foundation, added, “Kids with cancer can’t wait for progress. Our previous investment with Stand Up in a Pediatric Cancer Dream Team demonstrated the power of collaboration and innovation by combining immunotherapy and genomics for children facing the hardest-to-treat cancers.”

Sustainable Impact Beyond a Single Video

What sets this project apart from typical celebrity charity videos is the plan for long-term impact. The SU2C Pediatric Cancer Dream Team is not a one-off grant. It is designed to be a multi-year, multi-institutional effort aimed at changing the standard of care for pediatric cancer patients. By linking MrBeast’s enormous digital audience with established researchers, the campaign hopes to generate both immediate donations and sustained attention for an issue that often receives less funding than adult cancers.

MrBeast’s involvement also reflects a broader trend among top creators who are increasingly using their platforms for social impact. With a reach that extends far beyond traditional media, YouTubers and TikTok stars have become key players in fundraising and awareness campaigns. MrBeast, in particular, has shown that online influence can translate into real-world action, whether by removing millions of pounds of trash from the ocean or rallying fans to support cancer research.

For the children and families who appear in the video, the day was about more than just a photo opportunity. It was a chance to step away from hospital rooms and treatment schedules and simply be kids. It was a chance to laugh on a basketball court, share dinner with family, and feel celebrated by some of the most famous people on the planet.

As MrBeast put it, “No kid should have to deal with cancer and hopefully, by supporting the SU2C Pediatric Cancer Dream Team, we can help stop it.” The video encourages viewers to learn more about the campaign and contribute if they are able, turning a single piece of content into a potential movement for change.
