iOS 27 public beta is here with Siri AI, iPhone speed upgrades, and more

The first iOS 27 public beta is now available for iPhone, giving users an early opportunity to experience Apple’s most significant software update of the year. This release introduces the highly anticipated Siri AI, a redesigned Screen Time experience, enhanced Liquid Glass customization, and numerous performance upgrades that promise to make iPhones feel faster across the board.

Apple’s beta program has long been a cornerstone for developers and enthusiasts, and this year’s public beta offers access to the same features that were previously limited to registered developers. The iOS 27 update builds on the foundation laid by iOS 26, which introduced the Liquid Glass design language, and refines it with greater flexibility and clarity. For users, this means a more responsive interface, smarter AI integration, and a host of quality-of-life improvements that span every aspect of the iPhone experience.

How to Join the iOS 27 Public Beta

The Apple Beta Software Program is free and open to anyone with a compatible iPhone. Unlike developer betas, there is no need for a paid account. However, Apple strongly recommends installing beta software on a secondary device, as early builds may contain bugs, reduced battery life, or compatibility issues with third-party apps. Before proceeding, backing up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer is essential.

To enroll, visit the Apple Beta Software Program website and sign in with the same Apple Account used on your iPhone. After accepting the terms, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates on your device, select iOS 27 Public Beta, and return to the Software Update screen to tap Update Now. The update supports every iPhone that runs iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 and newer, as well as the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). However, Apple Intelligence features require at least an iPhone 15 Pro, with some advanced on-device capabilities limited to iPhone 17 Pro models or the iPhone Air.

Siri AI: The Headline Feature

Siri AI represents the most transformative change in iOS 27. Apple has rebuilt Siri around its next-generation Apple Intelligence system, enabling the assistant to maintain ongoing conversations, search personal information across apps, understand onscreen content, and take actions within applications. Responses now emerge from the Dynamic Island, and pulling down on a response opens a full conversation view. A dedicated Siri app keeps history synced privately through iCloud.

After installing the beta, users can ask Siri to find specific details buried in Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, or Calendar, then ask follow-up questions without repeating context. In beta 3, Siri gained early access to information from select third-party apps. The Camera app also integrates a Siri mode for Visual Intelligence, allowing users to photograph a membership barcode and convert it into a Wallet pass, or import events from a flyer. Apple has added controls for Siri’s pace and expressivity under Settings > Siri > Voice, which also affect spoken output in Maps and Safari. Siri AI initially supports select English variants and will not launch in the EU right away.

Apple Intelligence Upgrades Beyond Siri

The iOS 27 public beta spreads its AI features across multiple apps. Safari can automatically organize tabs by topic, group bookmarks and Reading List items, and surface recently closed topics on the Start Page. A new Notify Me feature watches webpages for changes, such as an item returning in stock, and Safari can even create a specialized extension from a natural-language description.

Photos gains three powerful editing tools: Clean Up for removing larger distractions, Extend for generating content beyond the frame, and Spatial Reframing for adjusting the apparent camera position after capture. These tools leverage on-device machine learning to produce natural results. The Passwords app can automatically replace weak or compromised passwords, handle verification codes, and show progress in a Live Activity. Shortcuts now allows building automations from plain-language requests, with iterative refinement. Other enhancements include Call Context in Phone, which surfaces reservation numbers when calling a business, photorealistic generation in Image Playground, and natural-language event creation in Calendar.

Liquid Glass Gets More Customizable

iOS 27 refines the Liquid Glass design introduced last year, focusing on clarity and flexibility. Controls now diffuse complicated backgrounds more effectively, with darker edges and brighter highlights improving legibility. App icons gain more layers and definition. The key addition is a new Liquid Glass customization slider under Settings > Appearance, ranging from ultra-clear to fully tinted. This setting applies system-wide, including third-party apps, allowing users to tailor the visual depth to their preference. Early testers report that the most opaque setting evokes a modern version of the classic Aqua UI from early Mac OS X, offering a nostalgic yet fresh feel.

Performance Upgrades Across the Board

Apple has promised significant speed improvements in iOS 27, extending beyond the newest hardware. Apps can launch up to 30% faster, nearby AirDrop transfers finish up to 80% faster, and new captures appear in Photos up to 70% faster. The CPU scheduler has been optimized back to the iPhone 11, resulting in smoother unlocking, Home Screen navigation, Control Center scrolling, and Lock Screen switching. Camera launches are faster even in Low Power Mode. Wi-Fi and cellular handoff is more intelligent, reducing the tendency to cling to weak networks. Search across Spotlight, Photos, and Mail has been rebuilt, with Mail now displaying up to five ranked Top Results.

These performance gains are particularly welcome for users with older iPhones, as iOS 27 aims to breathe new life into devices like the iPhone 11, 12, and 13. The optimization extends to background tasks, such as iCloud syncing and app updates, which now consume fewer resources. Apple has also improved thermal management, reducing the likelihood of throttling during intensive use.

Screen Time and Child Safety Overhaul

iOS 27 brings a major redesign of Screen Time and parental controls. The new dashboard provides parents with a clearer view of a child’s activity and one-tap access to changes. Time Allowances let parents set limits for categories like Games, Entertainment, and Social Media, while Schedules control app availability based on time of day, with separate routines for school days, evenings, and weekends. A new Ask to Browse feature extends the Ask to Buy flow to websites, and children can request permission before contacting someone new. Communication Safety, which previously detected nudity, now also intervenes when it detects gore or violent content. However, these features require all Family Sharing devices to run iOS 27.

Additional Features to Explore

The iOS 27 public beta includes dozens of smaller improvements. Messages now sends large media in the background without blocking newer texts and consolidates group-chat Tapback notifications. Photos adds full-resolution Shared Albums, Windows and Android contributions, keywords, star ratings, and customizable slideshows. Users can save any video frame as a photo with one tap. Alarm volume can be adjusted independently of system volume. Extra-large widgets can fill an entire Home Screen page. AirPods gain a custom equalizer for lows, mids, and highs. iPhone can connect directly to compatible GymKit equipment. FaceTime supports simultaneous front- and rear-camera video on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models. Home adds more reliable HomeKit Secure Video recording and native 4K camera support with eligible hardware and iCloud+ service.

Apple’s focus on quality-of-life improvements extends to the keyboard, which now offers better autocorrection for multilingual typists, and the Files app, which supports external drive formatting. The Health app gains new metrics for respiratory health, and the Weather app includes more granular precipitation forecasts. These refinements, while subtle, contribute to a more polished overall experience.

The iOS 27 public beta will continue to evolve throughout the summer, with Apple planning a final release this fall. Users are encouraged to report any issues through the built-in Feedback Assistant app. Given the scope of changes, this update is shaping up to be one of the most substantial in recent years, blending AI innovation with performance optimization and user customization.
