Apple TV has 15+ new movies and it’s just the start of a big fall lineup

Apple TV is making a major push into film this fall. The streaming service has just added more than a dozen classic movies for subscribers, a move that dramatically increases the size of its on-demand film library. The additions arrive just ahead of a season packed with new Apple original films. Subscribers in the United States can now stream a range of well-known theatrical hits without paying extra. The library expansion includes titles like The Martian, Arrival, Gone Girl, The Proposal, Zodiac, and 21 Jump Street.

These films span multiple genres, from science fiction to comedy to crime drama. That variety reflects Apple TV's broader content strategy, which has recently embraced both awards-season prestige projects and mainstream entertainment. By adding popular catalog titles, Apple is giving subscribers more reasons to remain in its ecosystem and increasing the value of its monthly subscription.

A sudden surge in movie choices

Historically, Apple TV has been known for original series and a smaller selection of films. The service launched with a handful of high-profile originals and has steadily built a reputation for quality over quantity. Its movie offerings, however, have often been more limited compared with competitors like Netflix, Prime Video, or Max. That appears to be changing quickly.

With this week's additions, Apple has essentially doubled its film catalog overnight in certain regions. The company did not announce the exact number of titles added, but the phrase “more than 15” highlights a meaningful expansion. Licensing classic films from major studios is a common way for streaming platforms to round out their libraries, and Apple TV is now leaning more heavily into that approach.

The selection in the United States includes both critically acclaimed pictures and crowd-pleasing hits. The Martian, Ridley Scott's science fiction survival story, stars Matt Damon and was nominated for multiple Academy Awards. Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is a cerebral alien drama with themes of language and time. Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher, is a psychological thriller based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel. Zodiac, also directed by Fincher, explores the infamous unsolved serial killer case in San Francisco. The Proposal is a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, while 21 Jump Street is a comedy reboot based on the classic television show.

These titles represent decades of filmmaking and bring a wide range of viewing options to Apple TV. They also demonstrate that Apple is interested in more than just exclusive originals; it wants a catalog that people can browse and discover.

Why licensing classic movies matters

Streaming services have long known that a robust library of familiar movies and shows helps retain subscribers. Original content is important, but there is comfort in watching an old favorite on a rainy evening. Licensing popular films is also a way to fill gaps while new productions are in the pipeline. For Apple TV, the move suggests a broader effort to compete more directly with the biggest streaming platforms.

Apple's approach to film has historically been distinct from its rivals. Rather than acquiring huge volumes of third-party content, the company has focused on building a curated brand. That strategy has won awards and delighted subscribers, but it also limits the amount of content available at any given time. Adding classic movies does not mean Apple is abandoning original film production. On the contrary, the company has a significant slate of new movies lined up for the fall.

The licensing deal also gives Apple a way to market the service around recognizable, beloved films. A subscriber who searches for Arrival or The Martian might discover an Apple original series recommended alongside it. That kind of cross-promotion is valuable in a crowded streaming marketplace.

The fall film lineup: six new originals

Apple TV's upcoming original movies are even more notable than the classic film additions. The service has announced six new films for the fall, with release dates spread
