Google is testing a radically simplified homepage for a small group of signed-out users, removing the familiar Search button and replacing it with three artificial intelligence shortcuts. The experiment, first reported by industry observers, has been reproduced in multiple browsers, but the traditional layout returns the moment a user logs in.

The New Homepage Layout

Instead of the classic Search button below the search bar, a few users see three buttons: Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm. The AI Mode button remains embedded inside the search box itself, and the long-standing "I'm feeling lucky" link survives as well, continuing its tradition of persisting through every major redesign. The change appears to be limited to signed-out visitors, meaning people who have not authenticated with a Google account.

The discovery was made on a Monday and was quickly reproduced across different web browsers, including Chrome and Microsoft Edge, as well as a newer browser called Comet. On each of those browsers, the three AI shortcuts appeared in place of the Search button. However, the effect is not universal; other users, and even some attempting to replicate the setup with different session data, still see the classic homepage.

Which Shortcuts Require an Account

According to the original reporting, two of the three shortcuts work without any login. Ask about files allows a user to upload a document and ask questions about its contents. Brainstorm opens a conversational session with Gemini, Google's AI chatbot. Create images, however, stops at a sign-in wall; it is the only one of the three that requires authentication before any action can be taken.

The reason for this difference has not been explained by Google. Many observers believe the most likely explanation is cost. Asking questions about a user-supplied file is relatively inexpensive in terms of computational resources. Generating an image, by contrast, uses a diffusion-based model that consumes far more processing power. Google's image generation model, sometimes informally referred to as Nano Banana, is known to be resource-intensive, so restricting it to logged-in users may be a way to manage abuse and expense.

The Sign-In Inversion

An even more curious detail emerged during testing. When a user who saw the new layout logged in to their Google account, the three shortcuts vanished, and the traditional Search button reappeared. When that same user logged out again, the experimental interface returned. This confirms that the test is tied to signed-out sessions and that Google is specifically targeting the experience of unauthenticated visitors.

This inversion suggests Google is trying to learn how different types of users interact with a homepage that de-emphasizes the classic search function. Signed-out users are often considered the least loyal visitors, because they have not established an account and may be more willing to switch to a competing search engine or AI assistant. By testing an AI-first homepage on these users, Google could be seeking to determine whether a new generation of search features can keep them engaged.

The Difficulty of Reproducing the Test

Shortly after the change was reported, a separate technology outlet attempted to verify the finding. The outlet's journalist tested multiple browsers and used several VPN locations to change apparent geographic region. In every attempt, the older, familiar homepage with the Search button appeared. The journalist was unable to see the new three-button layout under any combination of factors that were tried.

This inability to reproduce the experience is typical of an A/B test, in which a small percentage of users are randomly selected to see a variant while the rest see the control version. Google runs thousands of such tests each year. The variable that determines which version a user sees may depend on location, browser, session history, cookies, or other factors unknown to outsiders. Until Google confirms the experiment, its scope and parameters will remain a mystery.

Why Signed-Out Users Are the Target

The choice to test the buttonless homepage on signed-out users looks deliberate. A signed-out visitor is someone whom Google knows the least about; there is no search history, no demographic profile, and no account-level data to personalize the experience. These users are also the ones most likely to be considering switching to a different service. If Google can demonstrate that an AI-enhanced homepage without a Search button is just as effective for this group, it could be a sign that the company is confident in moving away from the traditional search-centric design.

The context is broader than just the homepage. Search is under immense pressure from generative AI tools that can answer questions directly without listing blue links. Publishers have watched referral traffic fall as AI-generated answers increasingly occupy the top of search results. The open web has paid the price, with many smaller websites seeing dramatic reductions in visits. In this environment, Google's homepage experiment may be seen as an acknowledgment that the search box alone is no longer sufficient to meet user expectations.

What an A/B Test Does Not Prove

It is important to remember that an A/B test is not a product decision. Google runs experiments on an enormous scale, and the vast majority of those experiments never reach a general release. Many are designed to test improbable design variations or to gather data for future features. The fact that Google is testing a homepage without a Search button does not mean the company intends to ship that version to everyone.

Google also has an obvious financial reason to keep the Search button in place. The reaction from the tech press has been mixed. Some see the experiment as an exciting step toward an AI-first search experience, while others view it as a risky move that could confuse users who have come to rely on the Search button as a visual cue. For now, the test remains limited in scope, and Google has neither confirmed nor denied any plans to expand it. The company's silence is itself information: if the experiment were performing poorly, Google might have already switched it off. The fact that it continues to run suggests at least some internal support.

The broader industry is watching closely. Competitors such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Bing, and a host of startup search engines are all experimenting with AI-first interfaces. A homepage without a Search button would be a symbolic break from the past, signaling that Google is willing to disrupt its own most successful product in order to stay relevant. Whether those buttons ever appear for the majority of users is uncertain. What is clear is that the era of the ten blue links is changing, and this tiny A/B test is one small reflection of that shift.

The disappearance of the Search button for a handful of signed-out users may seem trivial in the grand scheme of Google's operations, but it carries significant meaning. It represents a potential change in the way hundreds of millions of people begin their web browsing sessions. The familiar refrain of 'just Google it' might someday be replaced by a more conversational interaction, in which users speak directly to an AI agent rather than typing keywords into a box and pressing a button.

For now, the experiment offers a glimpse of a possible future, but it is far from certain. Google's homepage has been a constant in an ever-changing digital world. Altering it, even slightly, is like editing a landmark building. The company knows that such changes must be introduced slowly and with careful testing. This A/B test is a step in that process, but it is only one step on a long path.
