Google has announced a significant restructuring of its artificial intelligence leadership, marking one of the most consequential shifts in the company’s AI strategy to date. Demis Hassabis, who has led Google DeepMind since its formation and earlier guided DeepMind through its acquisition by Google, is stepping away from day-to-day operational leadership. He will become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. According to a Wednesday announcement from Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Hassabis will also remain at the helm of Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet’s AI-driven drug discovery venture.

In his new role, Hassabis will focus on strategic and global AGI matters while continuing to advise the company’s AI leadership. In a message to staff, Hassabis said: “As you’ve heard me say many times, I’ve always believed the No.1 application of AI should be to improve human health. Who is Demis Hassabis?

Hassabis is one of the most recognizable figures in modern artificial intelligence. A former chess prodigy and game designer, he co-founded DeepMind in 2010 with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. The London-based startup was acquired by Google in 2014 for approximately $500 million, a deal that has since been widely regarded as one of the most influential acquisitions in the history of AI research.

Under Hassabis’s leadership, DeepMind produced breakthroughs that reshaped the field, including AlphaGo, the first AI program to defeat a world champion human player at the game of Go.
