For more than forty years, Microsoft has treated Windows as one of consumer software's largest laboratories. Windows is the storefront, but behind it sits a collection of experiments: interfaces that talked to you, wallpapers that refreshed on their own, locked-down operating systems that could not run traditional desktop programs, and laptops with secondary screens that tempted fate. Some experiments became everyday features. Others were quietly retired after the market delivered its verdict.
Microsoft naturally celebrates the products that worked. But the failures are often more revealing because each one shows what the company believed the future looked like moments before reality pushed back. Here are five Windows experiments worth digging up, and the traces they left behind.
Microsoft Bob tried to make Windows a house
The talking dog outlived the home
Bob shipped in March 1995 as a $99 shell that replaced the Windows desktop with a cartoon residence. Programs were objects arranged on shelves, the calendar hung on a wall, and a cast of animated guides—most famously Rover the dog—walked users through tasks in speech bubbles. Melinda French, then a Microsoft marketing manager and later Melinda French Gates, led the marketing effort behind the product.
Bob demanded 8MB of RAM when many home PCs had far less, cost real money, and felt condescending to anyone already comfortable with Windows. It was dead within a year. But its DNA survived. Designer Vincent Connare created Comic Sans after deciding Times New Roman looked out of place in Bob's speech bubbles, although the font was completed too late to appear in the program. Rover was revived six years later to serve as the search assistant in Windows XP, where he annoyed an entirely new generation. Bob died, but its components kept getting transplanted into other products.
Active Desktop turned your wallpaper into a browser

In 1997, Microsoft decided the desktop should behave like a webpage. Active Desktop initially shipped as an add-on for Windows 95 and became a standard component of Windows 98. It let users attach live HTML content to the wallpaper, including stock tickers, news feeds, weather panels, and widgets that refreshed automatically during the short-lived enthusiasm for push media.
The concept was reasonable, but the execution was fragile. It forced modest PCs to run another web-rendering layer, often over slow dial-up connections that could become expensive if left active. The gray error screen offering to restore the desktop became part of the experience. Active Desktop also revealed how deeply Microsoft had wired Internet Explorer into Windows, an integration that later became central to the company's antitrust problems. The case was not really about animated wallpaper, but Active Desktop made the underlying technical entanglement visible.
The idea never disappeared. Live Tiles, taskbar news panels, and Windows 11's Widgets board all revived the notion of continuously updated information living beside the desktop.
SideShow put a second screen on your laptop lid
A good idea stranded on the wrong hardware
Windows Vista shipped in 2007 with support for SideShow, a platform for tiny auxiliary displays embedded in laptop lids or remote controls. These displays could show email, calendar appointments, or music controls without requiring the main screen to be open. Some implementations cached selected information so it stayed available while the PC was asleep or turned off. Peel back the lid of your closed laptop and see your day at a glance.
That was genuinely ahead of its time. Microsoft had sketched out the glanceable information model now delivered through smartwatch faces and always-on phone displays. Yet almost no hardware appeared. Asus released the W5Fe with a 2.8-inch SideShow screen in its lid, and a few keyboards and accessories experimented with the platform, but the broader ecosystem never arrived. Microsoft removed SideShow support in Windows 8.1 after manufacturers failed to adopt it in meaningful numbers.
SideShow's problem was timing. It added cost, thickness, power consumption, and software support to solve a problem that most buyers did not know they had. Today, the same role is played by the notification panel on your lock screen or the face of your wristwatch. The concept arrived before the hardware ecosystem could sustain it. It was waiting for screens people would actually carry.
Windows RT was Windows that couldn't run Windows software
A $900 million lesson in reading the label
In October 2012, Microsoft launched the Surface RT tablet with Windows RT, an ARM-based edition of Windows 8. It included a desktop and came with a version of Office, but it could not run the familiar x86 Windows applications built for Intel and AMD machines.
This was not an oversight. The ARM processor used a different instruction set from Intel's chips, and Windows RT lacked the translation technology that modern Windows on ARM systems use. Later versions of Windows on ARM achieved broader compatibility through x86 emulation, but RT had no equivalent escape hatch. Microsoft reserved the recompiled desktop experience largely for its own bundled software and pushed developers toward Windows Store apps. The result was an ecosystem with the Windows name but without the Windows catalog.
Consumers who bought the device expected the familiar desktop experience and found a strange cousin wearing familiar clothes. Nine months after launch, Microsoft recorded a $900 million charge related to unsold Surface RT inventory, among the most expensive admissions in the company's hardware history.
Yet the underlying argument for Windows RT was not wrong. Moving Windows to efficient ARM processors promised longer battery life and new form factors. Today's Copilot+ PCs and Snapdragon-powered Windows laptops revisit that ambition with far better compatibility, including native ARM support and emulation for many x86 and x64 programs. Windows RT failed because it skipped the one thing that makes Windows difficult to replace: the enormous catalog of software people expect to run.
Windows 10X was the future for about eighteen months
The operating system that vanished but left fingerprints
Microsoft announced Windows 10X in October 2019 alongside the dual-screen Surface Neo. It was a simplified version of Windows designed for a new category of folding devices, built on Microsoft's modernized Windows foundations to reduce the complexity and legacy behavior associated with conventional PCs.
The plan changed quickly. As the pandemic drove demand for familiar single-screen laptops, Microsoft redirected the project toward conventional devices. Further delays and strategy shifts followed. In May 2021, Microsoft said Windows 10X would not ship as a separate product and that some of its technology would be incorporated elsewhere. The Surface Neo never shipped at all.
But traces of it survived. Weeks after 10X was shelved, Microsoft introduced Windows 11. The centered taskbar, simplified Start menu, rounded corners, and cleaner visual language felt like a reincarnation of the abandoned system. Microsoft never presented Windows 11 as a renamed Windows 10X, but the family resemblance was impossible to miss. The product disappeared, yet its design vocabulary escaped into the mainstream.
Place the five experiments side by side and a pattern emerges. Microsoft's failures do not fully disappear. The interface, hardware idea, or technical ambition is stripped for parts and returned later in a form the market is better prepared to accept. Bob's assistant became a search agent and a font. Active Desktop's widgets became Live Tiles and Widgets. SideShow's glanceable screen now lives on wrists and phone lock screens. Windows RT's ARM dream eventually found a second life in modern Windows on ARM. Windows 10X's design language became Windows 11 itself. The experiments that died in public have a habit of resurfacing, changed but familiar, in products that manage to last.
