Extreme moves toward autonomous networking with advanced AI agent, management tools

Extreme Networks unveils second-generation AI agent for autonomous networking

At its Extreme Connect 2026 user conference, the company introduced Extreme Agent One, a proactive AI agent that monitors network activity, investigates anomalies, and automatically takes corrective actions without waiting for human prompts. CTO Nabil Bukhari described it as a shift toward “autonomous networking at scale,” where networks think, adapt, and act in real time. The agent features a “nudge” capability that alerts IT teams with findings rather than raw alerts, reducing resolution times and preventing user impact.

Platform ONE gains third-party device management

Extreme’s cloud-based management platform, Platform ONE, now supports discovering, monitoring, and basic management of network devices from Cisco, HPE/Juniper, and other vendors. The company positions this as a transitional tool to help customers migrate from legacy providers. New security capabilities include built-in Cloud PKI for zero-trust authentication, a Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS), real-time asset tracking, and flexible guest access.

New Wi-Fi 7 access points target high-density environments

Three new Wi-Fi 7 access points were announced: the AP5060 outdoor quad-radio model with up to 23 Gbps aggregate data rates, and the AP3020/AP3060 entry-level indoor/outdoor series for space-constrained settings. CEO Ed Meyercord noted that Wi-Fi 7 now represents 37% of Extreme’s wireless unit shipments, nearly half of wireless bookings by dollars, and is the first Wi-Fi generation suitable for mission-critical business applications.

Bukhari emphasized that AI agents like Extreme Agent One will become essential as network complexity outpaces the ability to hire human engineers. The agent’s ability to autonomously execute closed-loop operations within defined governance boundaries represents a significant step beyond today’s AI assistance tools. By 4Q 2026, a second release will add real-time event response and scheduled workflows that learn from interactions, increasing precision over time.

The company’s strategic focus on AI-driven automation, third-party management, and next-generation Wi-Fi 7 reflects an industry-wide push to reduce manual overhead and improve network reliability. As networks grow more distributed and dynamic, the combination of proactive AI, unified management, and high-performance wireless hardware positions Extreme to capture market share from legacy incumbents. The updates are available starting in Q3 2026, with further autonomous features rolling out by the end of the year.
