Apple Watch Ultra 3

The third-generation Apple Watch Ultra, unveiled in September 2025, builds upon the rugged foundation of its predecessors while introducing meaningful upgrades in display technology, connectivity, and battery performance. Priced at $799, it remains Apple's most expensive watch, but also its most capable—purpose‑built for endurance athletes, divers, and anyone who demands more from a wearable.

Design and Durability

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 retains the iconic 49mm titanium case, now available in Natural Titanium or a new Black Titanium finish with a diamond‑like carbon coating for improved scratch resistance. The display bezels have been slimmed down by 24%, increasing the active screen area to 1,245 sq mm while keeping the same overall dimensions. The flat sapphire crystal is more resistant to impacts, and the raised edges protect the screen during rough use. The watch is certified to MIL‑STD‑810H for temperature extremes, shock, and immersion, making it suitable for environments ranging from –4°F to 131°F.

Display and Performance

The LTPO3 wide‑angle OLED display reaches 3,000 nits peak brightness and maintains that brightness at wider viewing angles than before. An always‑on mode now shows a ticking seconds hand thanks to the faster refresh rate. Inside, the S10 chip—while not offering major performance gains over the S9—enables new gestures like Double Tap and Wrist Flick. The Wrist Flick gesture dismisses notifications or calls with a simple flick of the wrist, adding another layer of hands‑free convenience. Storage remains at 64GB.

Battery Life

Battery life has been significantly improved. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 now lasts up to 42 hours on a single charge, compared to 36 hours on the Ultra 2. In Low Power Mode, endurance extends to 72 hours for multi‑day adventures. Fast charging reaches 80% in 45 minutes, and a 15‑minute charge provides up to 12 hours of normal use. This makes it ideal for long triathlons, ultramarathons, or extended backcountry trips.

Connectivity and Satellite Features

The watch is the first Apple Watch with a dedicated 5G chip, enabling faster cellular data speeds. More importantly, it now supports two‑way satellite communications. When cellular and Wi‑Fi are unavailable, users can send Emergency SOS via satellite, message friends and family, and share their location via Find My. Emergency SOS works without a cellular plan; other satellite features require an active plan. The second‑generation Ultra Wideband chip provides Precision Finding for locating a misplaced iPhone, and the 86‑decibel siren can be heard up to 600 feet away.

Health and Fitness Monitoring

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 includes all the health sensors found on the Series 11: a third‑generation optical heart rate sensor, electrical heart sensor for ECG, blood oxygen monitoring (with U.S. limitations due to patent disputes), temperature sensing, and sleep apnea detection. New in watchOS 26 are Hypertension Alerts, which analyze 30 days of heart rate data to flag possible high blood pressure patterns, and Sleep Score, a numerical rating of sleep quality. The watch also supports Crash Detection and Fall Detection, automatically contacting emergency services if needed.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Depth app works with a built‑in depth gauge (EN13319 certified) for recreational scuba diving up to 40 meters. The Tides app provides tide information, and the Compass app supports Waypoints and Backtrack for navigation. The Action button on the left side can be customized to launch workouts, set waypoints, or activate the siren.

Comparison with Series 11 and SE 3

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 sits at the top of Apple's lineup, above the Series 11 ($399) and SE 3 ($249). It offers cellular connectivity (all Ultra models include it), a larger 49mm case, better water resistance (WR100, suitable for kitesurfing and diving), longer battery life, and exclusive features like satellite messaging and the siren. The Series 11 is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, with aluminum or titanium finishes, but lacks satellite support and has a shorter battery life. The SE 3 is the budget option with an older design and no blood oxygen or ECG sensors.

What's Next

Apple is not expected to redesign the Apple Watch Ultra until at least 2028. The 2026 update may bring a new watch face variant of Modular Ultra, but major hardware changes are unlikely. Rumors persist about noninvasive blood glucose monitoring and possible Touch ID, but those features remain several years away. For now, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the definitive choice for those who need a durable, connected, and health‑focused smartwatch that can handle the most demanding environments.
